On 5th March, five professors from Tama University, Teikyo Heisei University and Toyo University visited the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and Pacific Region in Suzhou, and held a discussion concerning disaster prevention and tourism development of World Heritage in Asia, as well as sustainable heritage sightseeing. Mr. CHEN Rongwei, Director of the Heritage Supervision Department of the Suzhou Gardens and Landscaping Bureau, and his team of experts welcomed and hosted the meeting with the visiting professors.
The meeting began with Mr. CHEN Rongwei’s introduction of the experience in the development, protection and management of the Suzhou Gardens. Mr. CHEN also spoke about the protection situation of World Heritage properties in the Asia and Pacific region, the heritage values of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou, and the activities and future plans of WHITRAP Suzhou. During the meeting, both parties thoroughly discussed the differences between Chinese and Japanese traditional gardens, and the disaster prevention, monitoring system, tourist management and inheritance of building techniques and skills for Suzhou Gardens. Although the traditional gardens of China and Japan are both in the Eastern style, they have their own distinct characteristics. As an outstanding representative of Chinese private gardens, Suzhou gardens embody the highest achievement of gardening art in China and have important position in the world garden history. Since the inscription of the Suzhou Gardens on the World Heritage List two decades ago, the city has been actively exploring garden restoration, heritage conservation and culture promotion. Similarly, Japan also has splendid theoretical and practical experience in garden conservation and maintenance. Both parties expressed their willingness to carry out exchanges and collaboration on the basis of garden conservation, and jointly promote the protection and inheritance of world heritage.
