8 Provinces Along Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Jointly Apply for World Heritage

Shan Jixiang, director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, previously announced the schedule for the World Heritage application of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The application work jointly launched by the eight provinces is now in progress. A total of 35 cities along the canal have completed their conservation plans, and the overall protection planning is under way after an information summary done by each provinces. The major sections along the canal for the application are also about to be determined before the kick-off of a comprehensive environmental engineering project. It is projected that the application texts will be submitted by 2013, and hope that the Grand Canal will be added to the World Heritage List in 2014

The application has become a national plan set by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage under the support of the State council. The Yangzhou section of the canal is thus thought to be the one with the best chance to success among other applications for the world heritage of the city.

The World Heritage Application Office announced last week that they have selected 22 application points along the Yangzhou section of the Grand Canal. These points present not only the abundance of heritage types in its history, but also each critical phase and a dynamic evolution process in its development. Gu Feng, the Director of the Yangzhou Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage and Application Office, said the application work is undergoing in a prudent manner according to its schedule, and has now been in its critical moment. The Application Texts of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and its overall conservation planning are also about to take shape.

There is to be a work meeting on the theme of the Grand Canal conservation and application for world heritage held by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage on April 12th-13th in Yangzhou. The meeting will focus on the progress of the application work and unveil final items selected into the tentative list, and the tasks in terms of conservation and environmental engineering projects in these major application sections.

Beijing; Tianjing; Hebei Province: Langfang, Cangzhou, Hengshui, Handan, Xingtai; Henan Province: Anyang, Hebi, Xinxiang, Jiaozuo, Luoyang, Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, Shangqiu; Shandong Province: Dezhou, Liaocheng, Taian, Jining, Zaozhuang; Anhui Province: Huaibei, Suzhou; Jiangsu Province: Xuzhou, Suqian, Huaian, Yangzhou, Zhenjiang, Changzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou; Zhejiang Province: Jiaxing, Huzhou, Hangzhou, Shaoxing, Ningbo.
