The first session of the 2009 Domestic Training Course on the Conservation Plan of Urban Cultural Heritage commenced on June 15, 2009. It organized by WHITRAP (Shanghai), Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning & Design Institute, co-organized by Research Center of National Historic Cities in Tongji University, sponsored by Ruan Yisan Heritage Foundation (RHF)

About 20 participants from numerous Chinese heritage sites and conservation institutes attended this course. The participants were officials and executives in charge of these sites and sought to learn more about conservation skills.
Prof. WU Zhiqiang, Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) and Director of WHITRAP(Shanghai), started off the opening speeches with a talk on the importance of this course and of its participants, stressing his expectation that the trainees will grow as a mutually cooperative entity in protecting world heritage. He further encouraged open communication and welcomed innovative thoughts and suggestions for heritage conservation.
Prof. RUAN Yisan, Director of Tongji University’s National Research Center of Historic City, elaborated on his experiences in initiating conservation in China. The professor cited Pingyao Ancient City, a World Heritage site, and the Grand Canal of China, a site on the tentative list. He enlarged on the difficulties in encouraging interest in heritage protection and offered some scholarships sponsored by the RHF.
Next, with the help of Dr. KONG Ping’s translations, visiting professor Prof. Hans Detlef Kammeier from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) at Bangkok spoke of how Chinese attitudes toward conservation had changed since his first visit to Asia fourty years ago. “There has been a radical change on how important history and conservation are,” he declared.
Finishing the welcome speeches, Dr. ZHANG Yanhua, who took in charge of this training, emphasized the small scale of the training course. She called attention to the focal points of this training course, such as the sustainable tourism of heritage sites and the implementation and management of conservation plans.
