Having obtained qualifications in architecture (BSc and MSc) Dr. Wijesuriya opted to work in the field of conservation. While practicing, he also obtained a Masters Degrees from Carnegie-Melon (USA) and York (UK) and obtained his Ph.D. from the Leiden University in the Netherlands, covering disciplines of historic preservation, archaeology and heritage management. As the Director of Conservation in the Department of Archaeology of the Sri Lankan Government, Dr. Wijesuriya was responsible for the heritage conservation programme from 1983 to 1999. From this, he brings a wide range of field experience related to conservation and management of historic buildings, archaeological sites, and urban centres including World Heritage Sites. As the Principal Regional Scientist of the Department of Conservation of the Government of New Zealand (2001-2004) Dr. Wijesuriya was involved in developing science and research strategies enabling conservation to be underpinned by the scientific knowledge. He has many publications to his credit. At present Dr. Wijesuriya is a Project Manger of the Sites Unit of ICCROM. He is the coordinator of the course on Conservation of Built Heritage (CBH07), deputy coordinator for World Heritage activities and oversees the Living Heritage Sites programme.
