In 2002 Prof. Zhou was entrusted by UNESCO with the project of GIS Historic Area in Xitang, later in 2003 on Poverty Relief and Sustainable Management of Cultural Heritage of Historic Waterside Towns. In 2003 he received a UNESCO Outstanding Achievement Award for Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation, in 2005 a French Knight Insignia of Literature and Art.
Prof. Zhou is the Deputy Dean of the College of Architecture and Planning at Tongji University, President of the Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning and Design Institute, Deputy Director of the National Researching Center of Historic Cities at Tongji University and Executive Director of Shanghai Urban Planning Trade Association.
