“Regeneration of Historic Towns: Italian And Chinese Experiences” Held in Shanghai

Seminar on “Regeneration of Historic Towns: Italian And Chinese Experiences”, jointly organized by Bologna University, Sino-Italian Campus of Tongji University, RUAN Yisan Heritage Fundation and WHITRAP Shanghai, was successfully held at Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning & Design Institute (TJUPDI) on March 10th, 2011.

Professor WANG Ruiguang from Sino-Italian Campus, Professor RUAN Yisan from College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University, Professor Giorgio CASACCHIA from Istituto Italiano per l,Africa e l,Oriente ( IsIAO), Professor Giampaolo NARONTE from B&T LLP, Professor Giampiero CUPPINI from Bologna University and officials from Qufu Urban Planning Bureau attended the meeting and made speeches.

Professor RUAN Yisan, drawing upon years of experience in preserving ancient cities, presented the efforts made in restoration of Chinese historic towns and cities, pointing out the main principles and ideas, as well as the problems in this regard. Mr. LIU Liang from Qufu Urban Planning Bureau briefed on the measures and policies concerning the conservation, restoration and the urban planning of Qufu in its development. As the first famous historic and cultural cities approved by the State Council, Qufu has initiated a series of policies and movements such as restorations of ancient buildings and sites, environmental improvement and infrastructure construction, on the basis of Conservation Planning for Chinese historic and cultural cities, for World cultural heritage and for the Conservation Unit of Cultural Relics .

Taking the city of Bolgna as an example, Professor Giampiero CUPPINI introduced the restoration techniques and ideas applied to the historic architectures there, and analyzed the new values of usefulness and benefits brought to the local tourism economy by those regeneration works. Professor Giampaolo NARONTE, from the perspective of a lawyer, illustrated the legal barriers and problems occurred in the process of restoring ancient cities, and the financial sources for the necessary materials and knowhow.
