Awarding Ceremony of Honorary Professorship for Ms. Irina BOKOVA Held in TJU

On May 14, 2012 at noon, Awarding Ceremony of Honorary Professorship for Ms. Irina BOKOVA was held in College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) in Tongji University (TJU). More than 40 people were present, including representatives from Chinese National Commission for UNESCO and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, President of TJU, PEI Gang, Vice President of TJU, WU Jiang, Director General of WHITRAP Shanghai, ZHOU Jjian, Vice Director of Foreign Affair Office, LI Xiangning, Party Secretary of CAUP, PENG Zhenwei, as well as professors, the staff and students from TJU and WHITRAP Shanghai.

Awarding Ceremony was hosted by Prof. PEI Gang. At first, introduced Ms. BOKOVA’s academic achievements, and then spoke highly of her contribution on enhancing the cooperation between UNESCO and China, especially the TJU, in the fields of education, science and culture. Afterwards Prof. PEI awarded Ms. BOKOVA honorary professorship in person.

Later, both sides exchanged their views on issues like the world sustainable development as well as the possibility of the new establishment of UNESCO Chair led by TJU, etc. and reached extensive consensus on further cooperation. Ms BOKOVA said, the establishment of WHITRAP in Tongji in 2008 marks the new level of our cooperation. This is the second time she has been in Tongji since in May, 2010. She expressed her gratitude to Tongji, and hoped to pay a third visit in the future.

Backgrounds

Irina Georgieva Bokova has been Director-General of UNESCO since November 2009, before that she was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria. She was once granted the Honorary Doctorate of many international renowned universities including University of Edinburgh, the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. In addition, she was also rewarded with many international honors, such as the honor award of the Female First International Association and the Order of the Sun---the highest award bestowed by the nation of Peru, etc.


UNESCO is the largest Inter-governmental Organization in the fields of education, science and culture. Ms Bokova is the first female Director-General in UNESCO history. After her inauguration, Ms Bokova attached great importance to the cooperation with China, a indispensable partner of UNESCO. She has been in China for many times and hope China will play a greater role in UNESCO. During her stay at China in 2010 and 2011, she had been received by the Party and State leaders like HU Jintao, WEN Jiabao, LIU Yandong, both sides expressed their expectation of further collaboration in the fields of education, science and culture.

Tongji University (TJU) has established multi-level partnership with UNESCO for a long time. TJU has taken an active part in various kinds of UNESCO academic exchange activities, and jointly host several activities with the institutions/ centers under the auspices of UNESCO. In recent years, many professors of TJU has won the UNESCO cultural heritage protection awards in succession. In 2008, the WHITRAP Shanghai was settled in TJU, henceforth abundant of education, training and research in the aspects of cultural heritage protection have been developed. In 2010, Ms. Bokova visited TJU and gave the high remark to the contribution by TJU, which marked a new stage on the cooperation of both sides.
