6th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage

The UNESCO intergovernmental committee (IGC) on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) held its sixth session in Bali, Indonesia, from 22-29 November 2011. Composed of 12 presentives from 24 UNESCO Member states and elected by the General Assembly of States Parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Intergovernmental Committee meets once every year to deliberate on the applications submitted by State Parties for world heritage property. Up to now, 139 states have signed the Convention.

The IGC inscribed 11 new elements on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and 19 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It also selected 5 new proposals to the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices, among which, the Hezhen Yimakan storytelling was inscribed into the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and Chinese shadow puppetry included into the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

To date, the List of Intangible Heritage in need of Urgent Safeguarding includes 27 items in 10 countries. The Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage now counts 232 items from 70 countries. Eight Best Safeguarding Practices have been registered. China has 7 and 29 items included into the first two categories respectively, as the country of the most inscriptions with 36 in total.
