Consultation Meeting on Myanmar’s Natural World Heritage Tentative List

Nov. 20-21, 2013, the Consultation Meeting on Myanmar’s Natural World Heritage Tentative List was held by Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry( MOECAF), UNESCO Bangkok in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, and cooperated with Nordic World Heritage Foundation, IUCN and the Ministry of Environment, Norway. There are approximately 40 participants including 10 International experts, and relevant local official department (Natural and Cultural) officers.

The meeting is divided into three parts: 1.Backgroud of Natural Heritage in Myanmar; Criterions for World Heritage Nomination informed by IUCN; 2.Introduction of eight Natural World Heritage Sites on the Tentative list; 3.Case Study of 2 prioritize Heritages (Hukaung Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuar) which are supervised under IUCN and international experts, and presented its OUVs by the local government officers.

In the next three years, the Myanmar’s government will initiate the in-depeth reseach and nomination dossiers for the highest priority natural heritage site supported by IUCN. If it is success, it would become the first World Heritage Site in Myanmar.
