Background
WHITRAP together with Tongji University and the OCHSPA / APPCA are pleased to announce that the Advanced Course on Conservation and Restoration Techniques of Traditional Architecture in the Asia-Pacific Region 2018 — Lime for Cultural Heritage Conservation and Restoration will be held from Feb 5th to 10th, 2018.
WHITRAP has been organizing a series of training courses since 2008, with the cooperation of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), the Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU Nara), the International Understanding Education Center, the Raymond Lemaire International Center for Conservation of University of Leuven, the Shanghai Tongji University and other international organizations and research institutions.
Course content
In the forthcoming edition of the course, the main topic is “Lime for Cultural Heritage Conservation and Restoration”:
Building Lime for cultural heritage;
High-tech lime - nano / micron lime Construction Technique;
Chinese traditional building lime crafts and their inheritance;
Objectives
Understand principles of different types of traditional lime curing and relevant application knowledge;
Acquire international knowledge of standards, principles and methods of Lime;
Enhance the practical ability of students to protect and restore rock and soil of cultural relics, mural protection and restoration, architectural heritage sites, historical and cultural villages and towns, etc;
understanding the key process of traditional construction and restoration of lime and related heritage, and strengthen the application in macro and micro fields;
Promote the exchange of experience and information among participants and institutions.
Methodology
Training will be based on various methodologies including lectures, case studies, site visits, model practices, group work and course discussion. During the course, participants will be instructed to share their own knowledge and experiences, to participate in case studies and group discussions to better grasp the knowledge.
Application Requirements
The international course is designed for a maximum of 25 participants from the Asia-Pacific region. Priority is given to:
- Professionals directly involved in management and conservation of World Heritage Sites;
- Researchers and technicians from institutes involved in the conservation and restoration of historic architecture;
- Professional staff from companies involved in the conservation and restoration of historic architecture.
- Participants need to be proficient in English reading, speaking, listening and writing.
Teaching Team
Members of the faculty include experts and professors from School of College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University, The University of Hong Kong, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, University of Applied Sciences Dresden, WHITRAP, UNESCO and other well-known heritage conservation institutions. All experts have both academic and practical experience to introduce broad international perspectives, classic cases and up-to-date expertise and information.
Language
English is the working language of the course. Candidates need to have strong communication and writing skills in English. Applicants whose native language is not English must provide an official certificate of English proficiency.
Certificate of Attendance
Organizers will evaluate the performance of participants who attend all training programs and complete the relevant research report. A certificate of attendance authorized by organizers will be awarded to participants who successfully complete the course.
Relevant fee
WHITRAP will cover relevant costs for all candidates during the course, including tuition fees (plus site visits), teaching materials, insurance and transportation fees. The candidates should pay other expenses, including accommodations and meals during the course, and airfare (round-trip ticket to Suzhou, CHINA) by themselves.
