Background

WHITRAP together with the School of Architectural of Southeast University are pleased to announce that the Advanced course on Conservation and Restoration Techniques of Traditional Architecture in the Asia-Pacific Region 2016 will be held from July  6th to July 15th  2016.

 

WHITRAP has been organizing a series of training courses since 2008, with the cooperation of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), the Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU Nara), the International Understanding Education Center, the Raymond Lemaire International Center for Conservation of University of Leuven, the Shanghai Tongji University and other international organizations and research institutions.

 

The course aims at establishing an academic platform where experts can share their professional knowledge in conservation and restoration of historic buildings, providing an overview of the various aspects of conservation and restoration of historic buildings in the Asian-Pacific Region.

 

In the forthcoming edition of the course, the main topics are:

  Standards/principles/regulations of wooden historical buildings restoration and conservation in Asia;

  History and development of wooden historical buildings;

  Construction materials and restoration methods of wooden historical buildings in Asia;

  Data collection and analysis of wooden historical buildings;

  Case studies of restoration and conservation of wooden historical buildings in Asia;

  Study trip to world heritage and historical district.

 

Objectives

﹣  Acquire a knowledge of principles and methodologies for the restoration of wooden historical buildings;

﹣  Have a better understanding of critical processes in conservation and of their application to macro/micro scaled monuments;

﹣  Help participants understand principles and methodologies for conservation and restoration of historical buildings and cultural heritage;

﹣  Expand awareness, knowledge and understanding of current principles and practices in conservation and restoration of historical buildings;

﹣  Promote the exchange of experiences and information among participants and institutions.

 

Methodology 

Training will be based on various methodologies including lectures, case studies, hands-on practices, site visits, group work and discussion. During the course, participants will be instructed to share their own knowledge and experiences, study cases, discuss in group and practice presentation.

 

Participants

The international course is designed for a maximum of 25 participants from the Asia-Pacific region. Priority is given to:

﹣  Professionals directly involved in management and conservation of World Heritage Sites;

﹣  Researchers and technicians from institutes involved in the conservation and restoration of historic architecture;

﹣  Professional staff from companies involved in the conservation and restoration of historic architecture.

Participants need to be proficient in English including reading, writing, reporting and engaging in discussion.

 

Teaching Team

Members of the faculty include experts and professors from School of Architectural of Southeast University, College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University, WHITRAP, UNESCO and other well-known heritage conservation institutions. All experts have both academic and practical experience to introduce broad international perspectives, classic study cases and up-to-date expertise and information.

 

Language

English is the working language of the course. Candidates need to have strong communication and writing skills in English. 

 

Certificate of Attendance

A certificate of attendance authorized by WHITRAP will be awarded to participants who successfully complete the course. Participants are expected to attend all lectures, site visits and reporting during the course.

 

Relevant fee  $800

The payment of the course fee ($800) will be divided in two parts, namely the Registration Fee ($200) and the Participation Fee ($600). In view of the large number of applications and limited number of participants for this course, if the application is accepted successfully, each candidate will pay $200 Registration Fee for reserving the position.

 

WHITRAP will cover relevant costs for all candidates during the course, including tuition fees (plus site visits), teaching materials, accommodations, insurance and transportation fees. The candidates will pay for their own airfare (round-trip ticket to the course venue).

 

Scholarship

Candidates are encouraged to source financial support by all possible means such as governmental institutions, employers and other funding agencies. WHITRAP is only able to offer a limited scholarship to selected candidate in need.

﹣  a recommendation letter from the applicant’s organization (with company chop/official signature).

Application deadline

Applications should be available at WHITRAP Suzhou by April 17th 2016 to meet our pre-evaluation schedule. The Admission feedback after pre-evaluation will be released to the applicants and their organizations, institutions or companies.
