World Natural Heritage: Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China (Phase I)

According to UNESCO’s World Heritage and Sustainable Tourism (WH+ST) Objectives, the pilot study of Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China (Phase I) focuses on two research themes, “Pilot demonstration of sustainable ecotourism in the World Heritage site” and “Cooperation construction between all stakeholders”. The project is jointly carried out by the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research for the Asia and the Pacific Region under the auspices of UNESCO, Shanghai Center (WHITRAP Shanghai) and Yancheng Wetland and World Natural Heritage Site Conservation and Management Center. It is chaired by Prof. Han Feng from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, and managed of Ms. Li Hong, programme director of WHITRAP Shanghai.

The pilot study will be conducted from November 2023 to November 2024. It aims to establish a cooperative foundation for heritage conservation and tourism development with a focus on the Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) of the Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf. It emphasizes the interpretation, exhibition, experience, and dissemination of OUV as its core, proposes strategies and methods for the sustainable tourism development of the heritage site, and launches research and demonstrations, including:
1. Rigorous and comprehensive research of the status quo and problem analysis of sustainable tourism at the heritage site.
2. Targeted demonstration and strategies for sustainable tourism at the heritage site.
3. On-site promotion of the World Heritage and sustainable tourism workshops.
4. Establishment of a coordinate sustainable tourism platform based on community and stakeholders.
