To celebrate the International Museum Day, the opening ceremony of main activity was held at the square of public culture which is located to the west of the Liaoning Provincial Museum in the morning of May the 18th. Many officials attended the activity, including SHAN Jixiang, Director of State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH), CHEN Zhenggao, Mayor of Liaoning Province, Deputy Mayor TENG Weiping, SONG Xinchao Deputy Director of SACH and Director General of China Museum Association and relevant chiefs from the above-mentioned organizations. . It’s the 35th International Museum Day this year, whose theme was decided by ICOM as Museums and Memory. It emphasized that the museum, as the important base of memory, inheritance, innovation of human culture, should assume the important responsibilities of recording the past, showing the development of present and future. The museum should also play an active role in preserving its cultural heritage, such as historic relics and collections, motive the public to discover and explore the historical memory, and protect rare and fragile cultural heritage of the human beings. The main hall was located in Shenyang Liaoning Province by SACH. In line with the theme, a series of colorful cultural activities, including the 9th Session of Ten Outstanding Collections among National Museum, thematic exhibition “The Origins of Chinese Civilization--Root-seeking from Liaohe River”, performance of Museums and Memory, and Competition of Ten Most Valuable Cultural Relics in Liaoning Province etc, were organized with the cultural department of Liaoning province The origin of international museum day In November, 1946, International Museum Association (ICOM) was founded in Paris, France. In June, 1974, ICOM held the 11th meeting in Copenhagen. ICOM defined that “A museum is a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment. ” In 1971, ICOM held a meeting in France, discussing the relationship between the cultural education of museums’ function and the human future. In 1977, in order to prompt the health development of global museum, to attract the public better understand, participate and care about it, ICOM announce to the world, May 18, 1977 is the first international museum day, and ICOM defines a specific theme for International Museum Day each year.. Since 2000, the themes of world museum day every year ICOM release are as follows: 2010 - "Museums for social harmony" 2009 - "Museums and tourism" 2008 - "Museums as agents of social change and development" 2007 - "Museums and Universal Heritage" 2006 - "Museums and young people" 2005 - "Museums bridging cultures" 2004 - "Museums and Intangible Heritage" 2003 - "Museums and Friends" 2002 - "Museums and Globalisation" 2001 - "Museums: building community" 2000 - "Museums for Peace and Harmony in Society" |
